What is this wonderful sport called Ultimate?

Ultimate is a fast paced sport that resembles many traditional sports, such as football and soccer in its athletic requirements; players are constantly sprinting, jumping, turning quickly and throwing throughout the game. Ultimate is played on a field similar to that of football. There are fourteen players on the field, seven on each team. The object of the game is to catch the disc in the opponent's end zone.  Once a player gains possession of the disc, she must immediately stop running. After establishing a pivot foot, she will look to advance the disc upfield by throwing to another player on her team. If the throw is not completed, the opposing team gains possession of the disc and is now on offense. This is called a turnover. Other ways turnovers can occur are when a pass is intercepted, the disc is dropped, or a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by the Spirit of the Game where sportsmanship, integrity, and fair-play are upheld by the players rather than referees. Can I join even if I've never played before?

Absolutely! The majority of players in our program didn't start playing until college! Come to practice and we will teach you the fundamentals and rules of Ultimate. Don't let a lack of experience deter you from joining us! Our players come from a variety of athletic backgrounds including but not limited to soccer, cross-country, gymnastics, lacrosse, swimming, basketball, softball, and more. If you're looking for a fun way to stay active, enjoy being on a team, and possess a hard work ethic then you've come to the right place!

What are the eligibility requirements for joining the team?

All players must be "degree-seeking" part or full time undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh. Also must want to have fun and meet some pretty awesome women!

When and how often does the team practice?

High Voltage typically practices 3 times a week during both the Fall & Spring semesters (reach out to us for exact practice days & times). Practices consist mainly of drills, conditioning, and LOTS of scrimmaging! In order to become better ultimate players, and all around better athletes, we encourage our team to do weekly track workouts and lift in the gym.

Where are practices held?

Practice are inside or outside the Sports Dome depending on the season and weather. Practice/tryout info will be sent through email and GroupMe (email voltageultimate@gmail.com OR dangerultimate@gmail.com to be added).

How competitive is High Voltage?

As mentioned in our about page, High Voltage was established to give more womxn the opportunity to play Ultimate at Pitt. However, that doesn't mean that we're not a competitive team! Whether it be because of classes, work, or time commitment, HV has a wide range of players. We believe that anyone who wants to play should be able to play!
